Muddy rivers are turning back into blue and green wandering streams. Rushing creeks are calming to a babble and every angler has fish on the mind.

Summer begins this week, with the first official day on Friday the 21st. Summer represents nearly endless opportunities to explore new and old fishing spots. Let FishAngler be your best ally for making the most of each day spent on the water!

Below are some of the best FishAngler app functions to help you find new water, explore different tactics and keep your lines tight all summer long.

Use Groups and Clubs to Refine your Fishing

In our home base of South Florida, summer can be a difficult time for offshore fishing. Most tarpon have migrated north. Species like kingfish and mahi-mahi can be found, but not in as great of numbers. Basically, fishing gets harder offshore come July. Nothing beats expert advice during this time and FishAngler Groups are filled with it.

You can join a local fishing group, or find a public one! Start “picking the brains” of local captains and anglers alike. We can’t guarantee they will give up the GPS coordinates to their secret spot, but you may get a lead on bait, tactics or a general region where the fish are congregating. Try checking on member posts and analyzing their catch details for further info.

Keep an Eye on the Forecast

When the summer weather takes it’s hold, the heat, early sunrise and late sunset times are going to drastically change fish activity. Now, the Solunar Forecast says peak fish activity is around noon. But I know in just a few weeks the water temps will make noon a pointless time to cast for cold water fish. When planning for a day on the water, be sure to check the Solunar to see those peak activity times. The activity levels will shed light on which baits to use, which flies to cast and whether you want to be fishing on the surface, or closer to the bottom of your river, lake, or pond.

Wind, Waves and Tides

The ocean brings up its own set of challenges when planning a fishing day. Tides, winds and waves will all change from spring, often becoming more calm. This may not have a positive effect on offshore fishing but can be great for species like red drum, or black drum, which will feed on the plentiful amounts of bait fish and shrimp in estuaries.

When targeting inshore species, though, pay close attention to your FishAngler app for tide information and winds as those will have a serious impact on your day.
