Fishing is one of the most popular outdoor sports in the world. In the U.S. over 1.9 million people cast a line every year. That means great things for conservation and the success of the sport! Even with these numbers, people looking to get involved with fishing may still face some barriers. These barriers prevent them from learning the true joy of being on the water.

The internet is a great place to answer questions, but rarely answers all questions in one place.

The FishAngler app is the only free fishing app new anglers can use to find everything in one place. From new fishing spots, gear recommendations, bait, or lure advice, to fishing tactics, species info and maps, FishAngler has everything a new angler needs.

Read on for some of the best features FishAngler has to offer, and how they can help new and interested anglers take their first steps to catching fish.

Search for New Anglers in Your Area

New anglers usually start fishing near where they live. To succeed in your area, you have to know and understand your local waters and species. Those who didn’t grow up fishing, or who began fishing later in life may not have a mentor handy for teaching. With the FishAngler app, anglers can follow and communicate with anglers in their area.

When you follow anglers, you will receive catch reports and photos from them in your feed. This provides information on species, where they are being caught, and the fishing tactics that work for them. A new angler can get even more information if the angler you follow fills out a complete fishing report. The report will contain more detailed fishing information than you will find anywhere else. Water depth, temperature, fishing tactics, fight time and gear used are just some of the stats on a full report. Each one will give you clues as to where the fish are and what baits they are chasing at any time of year.

Lastly, you can always try and reach out to anglers through a comment. We can’t guarantee if someone will share their fishing knowledge with you, but you may just be making a lifelong fishing friend.

To find local anglers, go to your feed and tap the “Local” tab in the top center of your screen. FishAngler will use your phone’s internal GPS to narrow down posts to your neck of the woods.

Join Groups for Nationwide Information

FishAngler Groups are for like-minded anglers across the world. Anglers join to discuss specific types of fishing and share information and successes. Groups are a great way to get a different perspective on your favorite type of fishing locally. Or on a different side of the country. Or even a different part of the world! In a group you can gain invaluable tips like different types of knots, how to tie them and when to use them. Or discover new baits or different fishing tactics that aren’t used in your region.

Groups can also be helpful if there aren’t enough users in your area yet. Plus, group members may be more apt to share information if they aren’t worried about finding you in their secret spot.

Groups exist for almost every fishing category you can think of and you can search for categories at the top of the “Groups” screen. Search for topics like bass, trout, and tuna; regions, styles of fishing, and more. You can even narrow down your search further with suggested categories like guides, freshwater, offshore and more.

To find a group, tap the “More” icon at the bottom right of your screen, then scroll down and select “Groups”. Once you find the group you’re interested in, tap the “Join” button.

Find Your Way

One of the largest barriers preventing prospective anglers from joining the sport is simply not knowing where to cast their line. Finding lakes, ponds and stream access isn’t always easy, but with FishAngler’s map, you can search the bodies of water near you to plan your next outing. FishAngler uses Google Maps and Google satellite imagery to provide a base map for you to explore.

The standard Google Map is perfect for finding highways, city roads and other general routes to your fishing location. The standard view will give you city and street names as well, making it perfect for navigation. The satellite imagery view will help you scout your new body of water with incredibly accurate imagery showing you overhangs, shallow, riffles and river bends.

Along with the maps, you will have access to a wide array of map layers to help you find specific bodies of water, photos, reports, water gauges and catch information. You can also filter the photos and catch information to only show you catches of specific species you’re interested in. This will refine your searches and help you locate and learn about the species you are interested in. Your filter can also help you refine catches pertaining to specific sets of dates, because as the seasons change, so does the fishing. This method will give you details on fishing tactics and baits used for your specific time of year.

It’s Free

The initial cost of fishing, including rods, reels line, tackle and licenses, can be another barrier to fishing. No other app gives you this much data and resources all in one place for the cost of nothing!

Whether you’re 7, or 70, it’s never too late to start enjoying a new hobby. Let FishAngler help you realize what the sport of fishing is all about and start making memories that will last for a lifetime.
