Fall is on our doorstep and many “fair weather” anglers may stash their rod and reel at the first sign of autumn. Most anglers, though, know fall is a great time of year to be on the water.
From fish making their way up river systems, to hungry bass and pike savagely attacking lures; FishAngler can help you capitalize on the best fishing opportunities this fall.
Changes in Weather
Fall weather can change on a dime, but it’s not just the weather you need to look out for. Even with a steady weather pattern, daily temperatures often swing wide. It’s not unheard of to wake up with the temperature in the forties, only to have the temperature climb well into the eighties or nineties that day. These changes can have a dramatic impact on fish feeding patterns and can make it difficult for you to succeed.
Pay special attention to FishAngler’s weather forecast with detailed information like wind speed and direction. Also, be on the look out for wave direction and tide data, and for any incoming storms. After you’ve checked on the weather, make sure to look at the Solunar Forecast. Cold weather patterns will likely make fish sluggish and bites may occur sporadically during the day based on conditions like temperature, pressure and cloud cover. The Solunar Forecast will give you a unique estimation on when fish activity will be its highest throughout the day. This feature will inform you when you should be casting, or what tactics you should switch to when the bite is cold.
Following Bodies of Water
Fall weather often turns the fishing on specific bodies of water up to 11. Fish will often dive deep, or migrate to a connected piece of water in pursuit of a colder climate. Certain stretches of ocean can also be devoid of game fish until fall weather. Sometimes currents start up vast bait fish migrations, which in turn attract game fish. As the heat of summer slowly gives way to fall conditions, it’s imperative to keep track of bodies of water. Most of us don’t have the time to be constantly scouting for migrations and fall runs. When you follow a body of water on FishAngler you can monitor what other anglers are catching on that body of water. This will help you plan your fishing days to the fullest.
How To Follow a Body of Water on the App
- Open the FishAngler app and tap the “More” icon in the bottom right corner of the screen.
- Scroll down and tap “Bodies of Water near me.”
- Search for and select specific bodies of water to follow, and select the “Follow” button to the right of each option.
Following Species
Timing can be everything when fishing. In the fall, migrations are going, and schools of salmon, steelhead and other sea-run trout are traveling back upstream. Without a proper report, you may be too far up river, on the wrong kelp bed, or the wrong reef.
Another way to keep your eye on a specific species is to only follow posts featuring that species in them. Following a specific species allows you to refine all fishing posts on your map, so only fishing reports, photos and posts with your specific interest will appear on the map. Then you can see where fish are being caught, or how high up the river the schools of fish have traveled, plus the dates they were caught.
How To Follow a Species on the App
- Select the “Map” button on the bottom of your screen.
- From your map, tap the filter icon in the top right corner of the screen.
- Toggle from the “Layers” tab to the “Filter” tab at the top of the screen.
- On the filter screen, tap the fish species option, then type in the name of the fish you want to follow and select.
- Now go back to your map and all fishing posts will solely feature your desired species.
Manage Your Gear
The changing weather and temperatures of fall means changing your tactics, too. Topwater lures and streamers are both optimal in the fall as the cool water and weather drives activity in fish. Bass and pike will be more aggressive than they were during the heat of summer. But attracting that aggressiveness will require some nuance in your bait selection and speed of retrieve. To help manage your baits, lures and tactics the “My Gear” function allows you to upload your favorite tools and how they work for you in each autumn situation. This a long-term tactic, that will teach you more about each scenario you fish in and how to address fishing during each season.
How to Add Gear to Your Tackle Box on the App
- To add gear to your digital tackle box, click the “More” icon in the bottom right corner of the screen and tap “My Gear”.
- Scroll through your list of submitted baits and lures, or select “Add gear” at the bottom of the screen to make additions to your list.
Anglers across the world know that there is no better time to fish than fall. Don’t let the cool weather impede on your favorite past time, and make sure to use FishAngler to experience a fall fishing season like never before.
